SAFe Configurations and Levels

Modular framework adaptable to different hospital sizes and needs

SAFe offers four configurations to meet different organizational needs:

Essential SAFe

  • Core configuration with minimum necessary elements
  • Team and Program levels only
  • Ideal starting point for hospitals beginning agile transformation
  • Focuses on getting an initial Agile Release Train running

Large Solution SAFe

  • For complex solutions requiring multiple ARTs
  • Adds Solution level coordination
  • Suitable for large hospital information systems with many modules
  • Coordinates multiple teams without full portfolio management

Portfolio SAFe

  • Adds enterprise-wide strategic alignment
  • Includes Lean Portfolio Management
  • Budget allocation as Lean Budgets with guardrails
  • Manages enterprise Epics across the organization

Full SAFe

  • Complete configuration with all levels
  • For largest healthcare organizations
  • Integrates Team, Program, Solution, and Portfolio levels
  • End-to-end agile transformation across the enterprise

SAFe Levels:

  • Team Level: Where agile teams perform the work
  • Program Level: Multiple teams form Agile Release Trains (ARTs)
  • Solution Level: Coordinates multiple ARTs on large initiatives
  • Portfolio Level: Manages strategy and investment across the enterprise

The central concept is the Agile Release Train (ART) – a virtual team-of-teams (50-125+ people) delivering value in a synchronized cadence.
