SAFe offers four configurations to meet different organizational needs:
Essential SAFe
- Core configuration with minimum necessary elements
- Team and Program levels only
- Ideal starting point for hospitals beginning agile transformation
- Focuses on getting an initial Agile Release Train running
Large Solution SAFe
- For complex solutions requiring multiple ARTs
- Adds Solution level coordination
- Suitable for large hospital information systems with many modules
- Coordinates multiple teams without full portfolio management
Portfolio SAFe
- Adds enterprise-wide strategic alignment
- Includes Lean Portfolio Management
- Budget allocation as Lean Budgets with guardrails
- Manages enterprise Epics across the organization
Full SAFe
- Complete configuration with all levels
- For largest healthcare organizations
- Integrates Team, Program, Solution, and Portfolio levels
- End-to-end agile transformation across the enterprise
SAFe Levels:
- Team Level: Where agile teams perform the work
- Program Level: Multiple teams form Agile Release Trains (ARTs)
- Solution Level: Coordinates multiple ARTs on large initiatives
- Portfolio Level: Manages strategy and investment across the enterprise
The central concept is the Agile Release Train (ART) – a virtual team-of-teams (50-125+ people) delivering value in a synchronized cadence.
